July 2012 - History Granite State Chapter 2011-2012

ASHRAE Year 2011-2012 was the 25thyear of the Granite State Chapter.   We celebrated our 25th year. 
 
Chapter officers for the year were:

The ASHRAE year began with the Region 1 Chapters Regional Conference (CRC) August 18 – 20 in New York City, NY. Among the awards presented to the Granite State Chapter was the TBD.

September saw our 3rd Annual Golf Outing at the Candia Golf Club attended by ASHRAE Region I - Steve Rosen. The Granite State Chapter was honored to be the first official Chapter visit by Steve. The golf outing was a financial success. In addition, this was the second year that awarded a free dinner to the winner of the Tech Challenge posted in the monthly newsletter. The Tech Challenge is part of sustainability program and invites members to be the first to submit the correct solution to an HVAC related problem.  Our September presentation was by Gary Phetteplace, PhD, PE about Development of an ASHRAE Design Guide for District Heating and Cooling Systems.  This showcased an ASHRAE Reserch project by a company right here in New Hampshire.

 
The October meeting was a tour of Viega Educational Facility in Nashua, NH, followed by dinner and presentation. David Desjardins, Product Manager of Laars Heating Systems gave a presentation focused on radiant cooling, including features & benefits, system components, applications, design criteria and sample
projects after the dinner. The tour and meeting was very well attended especially by our Student Members.
 
In October we held the Energy Modeling sessions.  We want to thank all of our presenters, Joe Cefaly of Mitsubishi, Ian Molloy of Autodesk, Brett Zerba of Taco Pumps, Neal Fisher and Ed Allen of Multiaqua, and Liam Buckley of IES VE.
 
In October we created a new Granite State website www.nhashrae.org.  We also purchased a tablet and projector to modernize our BOG sessions and have instant recording of BOG meeting notes.  This will help us to release meeting minutes which contains action items for attendees.

November's meeting was on rainwater harvesting and it’s use with HVAC systems-cooling towers by Bill Pink and Phil Pappas.

 
December saw our annual Student Poster Session which was very well attended.  Chapter President, Joshua Benoist, presented Elmore Merritt and TBD, student members from Manchester Community College, a $250 scholarship each from the Granite State Chapter.  December's meeting was on multi-zoning with variable water volume (VWV) systems by Neal Fisher.
 
In January, ASHRAE society announced a rebranding of the ASHRAE logos.
 
January 22 the ASHRAE Winter Meeting and AHR Show was held in Chicago, IL.  4 members from the Granite State Chapter attended the meeting and trade show.
 
In January we held two meetings. The normal meeting was moved due to a snow storm to the very last day of the month.  It was held at the Fratellos in Manchester with a presentation by Harry Milliken on Natatorium Design. We also held a Joint meeting and facility tour on January 25th with AFE Chapter 140. Tour will be at the Buderus facility followed by dinner at The Yard Restaurant in Manchester.
 
February's meeting was by Peter Comeau of RECCO on Ammonia Refrigeration Design in Distribution Centers.

The March meeting was a TOUR of the wood chip boiler plant at the Merrimack Valley School in Penacook, NH. Following was a dinner and presentation
at the Red Blazer restaurant in Concord where Bill Root will be discussing the boiler plant design.

 
We sent a YEA member (Eric Corrum of Viega and a new board member) to the national YEA gathering in San Diego.
 
April was our annual joint meeting with the Maine ASHRAE Chapter and our Distinguished Lecturer, Jim Newman at the Red Hook Brewery in Portsmouth, NH.  Jim covered several subjects including: A technical session on saving energy with BeQ and the main presentation on saving energy with Integrated Design.  Joshua Benoist, PE did a presentation on saving energy with Integrated Design and BIM tools.

May was another tour, this time of the Life Sciences Building at Dartmouth College.  Bo Peterson and Dartmouth College Rick Jaros lead the tour and gave the presentation at Dartmouth. At this meeting the swearing in of officers for 2012-2013 was held.   

 
In May we held two more Energy Modeling sessions. We want to thank all of our presenters, Paul Bemis of CoolSim, Joshua Benoist of Autodesk.
 
On June 16th the 3rdAnnual Granite State Deep Sea Fishing trip was held in Newburyport, MA.
